About PRL

During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, a group of leading experts came together to launch the Pandemic Response Lab (PRL) which was announced by NYCs Mayor De Blasio in August 2020. As New York City reopens, PRL is expanding its panel of non-COVID diagnostic tools with the aim of making diagnostic testing easier, faster and more accurate for a broad spectrum of health applications. Based in Innolabs in Long Island City/Queens, PRL is a state-of-the-art high complexity lab dedicated to advance the field of molecular diagnostics.

About the Role

We are currently seeking a Research Associate to join our growing Cell & Immuno Technologies team. The successful candidate will directly work towards the development and implementation of robotic and automation approaches for novel cell-, imaging- and immuno-based procedures and diagnostic tests.

Embedded in the Cell & Immuno Technologies team, the successful applicant will work to enable robotic and automation approaches for the diagnostic tests developed, and under exploration, by the team. The successful candidate will establish and maintain custom robotic protocols and will oversee routine and preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and minor repairs on the equipment. This position will function as a liaison between the Cell & Immuno Tech. team and the Automation team, and therefore will require basic versatility and interest in both biology and automation/robotics.

Responsibilities

* Work together with the other Research Associates (RA) and Scientists of the team to identify, develop, and characterize automation approaches specific and optimal for each of the diagnostic tests;

* Directly learn from the Scientists and RAs of the Team to perform several diagnostic tests to help identifying better automation/robotic routes to explore;

* Develop, maintain, and improve automation protocols applied, or to be applied, to several cell-based, image-based diagnostic tests;

* Function as a liaison between the PRL Automation team and the Cell & Immuno Team ensuring a clear line of communication and implementation of novel automation approaches;

* Assist outside vendors and service technicians with the installation of lab instrumentation, such as robotic liquid handlers and high-throughput handling support systems

* Keep track of and perform maintenance as needed for the instrumentation and laboratory equipment used by the team to guarantee optimal performance of the instruments at all times;

* Assist in the writing of automation procedures and train other members of the team on the appropriate use of liquid handlers, robotic instruments and other equipment;

* Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.

Basic Qualifications

* Degree in Engineering with direct experience in Biological Sciences, or degree in Biological Sciences with direct experience with robotic and high-throughput automation;

* Strong propensity and experience in working with robotics and automation;

* Interest and basic experience in benchwork for applied biology;

* Familiarity with coding languages such as Python and R;

* Troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities;

* High throughput liquid handling experience;

* Laboratory automation experience.

Advanced Qualifications

* Previous industrial experience with laboratory automation

* High throughput liquid handling experience

* Knowledge of IQOQPQ per CLEP/CLIA regulations

* Experience with programming and development of custom protocols
